Other Cases (by Yeung, Chap-Yung)

Source: Hong Kong and Toronto, past 40 years

Classical Infectious Mononucleosis syndromes -
Not as common in Chinese adolescents compared with Caucasians
Although even more uncommon in young children, youngest patients seen was only 6 weeks old
Unique hematologic conditions -hemo-phagocytosis syndrome; aplastic anemia
Other Presentations:
Encephalitis, maculo-papulary rash, myocarditis, pleurisy, interstitial pneumonitis, arthralgia/arthritis including dactylitis of big toe ( simulating gouty attack in adult ).

Lessons:
1) Clinical Spectrum of EBV infections in Chinese children is very wide-range
2) Presenting features range from isolated disease of a single tissue or organ to the combination of features to the classical Infectious Mononucleosis Syndrome
3) EBV is a very intriguing disease, it can mimick any disease in the child.
